Your Essential Digital Toolkit in the United Kingdom

When shopping at Costco, the biggest fear is misreading the price tag and going way over budget at the checkout. However, during a recent grocery run, our editor encountered a "reverse scam" — the displayed price was clearly higher than the till price. It actually ended up being cheaper?
Was it an employee error, or a hidden discount? Today, we'll share this real-life experience and teach you how to use a tool to check your total accurately!
It started when I went to Costco to stock up on coffee. I saw a 3-pack of Nescafé Dolce Gusto coffee pods with a price tag clearly stating £10.99 (coffee is 0% VAT).
As a smart consumer, I have a habit of opening our self-developed Costxx Shopping Helper while putting items in the trolley, so I immediately entered £10.99. I was thinking, a lot of people mention the till overcharging.
Who knew that after scanning at the till and checking the receipt, the Dolce Gusto was only charged at £9.99!
I quickly double-checked the receipt, and there were absolutely no "£X.00-" discount indicators. It was just genuinely £1 cheaper.
In UK Costco community groups, quite a few shoppers have encountered similar situations. Based on collective experience, there are usually two reasons:
Costco's prices are adjusted from time to time. The till system might have updated with the new price, but store staff, perhaps due to being short-staffed, might have missed changing the physical price tag in that section.
Sometimes promotional materials state a discount, but there might be too many discounted items, or the start and end dates vary. For various reasons, store staff haven't updated the till prices in time.
This time I "hit the jackpot," but what if the situation is reversed — the price tag is cheaper, but the till charges you more?
According to UK retail conventions (though not a statutory right), if you find the system overcharged you after checkout, you can take your receipt and the item to Customer Returns.
After this experience, I feel even more strongly about the importance of tracking prices while shopping.
If you are using the Costxx Shopping Helper:
Costco's pricing system does occasionally have a "time lag." Don't be too surprised the next time you encounter an inconsistency between the price tag and the till. The most important thing is to know what you should be paying!
